The Super•Cor Arch from our partner AIL Group was the perfect solution, allowing road traffic to safely pass under the haul road.
The Project
The Cloudbreak mine in the Pilbara WA was being expanded so work could begin in the nearby Abrolhos Pit development. This expansion would enable autonomous trucks to haul iron ore along an established corridor.
The challenges
The new pit and the ROM pad were on opposite sides of the existing corridor, which consisted of both an ore train line and a local vehicle road. A solution that allowed safe passage for road traffic was required, ensuring other vehicles did not hamper trucks travelling along the haul road.
An engineered steel road arch spanning 7.9 metres and rising 6.7m was identified as the best way forward.
ACP’s solution
The Super•Cor Arch from our partner AIL Group was the perfect solution, allowing road traffic to safely pass under the haul road.
Super•Cor® is the most internationally accepted and widely used corrugation profile on the market, providing a solution for culverts, reline projects, railway underpasses, mine portals and more.
This engineered corrugated steel pipe tunnel offers the superior strength and durability of galvanised steel, combined with a lightweight construction that will not crack under impact loads or vibrations.
The high ring compression of the pipe absorbs and transfers the load to the surrounding soil around the entire circumference, whilst the beam strength maintains the grade and line of the structure by bridging inequalities of the trench bottom and side fill.
This structure features innovative soil reinforcement on the bevelled ends using AIL’s Grid-Strip Soil Reinforcement System. On top of each backfill lift along the bevel area, welded wire Grid-Strips were attached to a series of integrated connection anchors along the exterior sides of the bevel.
These alternating layers of soil reinforcement and compacted backfill created a mechanically stabilised backfill that held the bevel’s shape, saving time and money.
With no need to reinforce the bevels with concrete, and no need for interior false-work bracing during backfill, the project could be completed quickly and cost-effectively.
Corrugated Steel Pipe, Tunnels & Bridge Structures from ACP
The Cloudbreak mine in the Pilbara WA was being expanded so work could begin in the nearby Abrolhos Pit development. This expansion would enable autonomous trucks to haul iron ore along an established corridor.
With their lightweight construction and superior strength, the structural steel products supplied through ACP are a natural choice for haul road arches across many Australian mining applications.
Ultra•Cor, the world’s strongest structural steel plate, and Super•Cor are natural solutions for larger engineered structures that need to withstand the heaviest of loads.
