Faster, more efficient MSE walls for Victoria’s Level Crossing project

Project Details
Client: Fulton Hogan / Metropolitan Road Alliance
Project: Evans Road, Lyndhurst – Level Crossing Removal
Time Period: Feb – July 2020
Total wall area: 2,947m2
System used: Grid-Strip Reinforcement System

The Project

To deliver this attractive feature, the contractor needed an efficient retaining wall solution and ACP was able to assist, adding value by seamlessly embedding our product into the design and helping with a precast workflow to speed up production.

The Level Crossing Removal project encompasses over 85 level crossings throughout Victoria which are being made safer with the addition of bridges, overpasses and the realignment of roads.

For this project, the level crossing at Evans Road, Lyndhurst needed to be removed and replaced with a new road bridge.

A new 620-metre road bridge was built using 135,000 tonnes of compacted earth, 450 tonnes of Australian made steel and more than 3000 cubic metres of locally sourced concrete. The scope also included a range of other works, to a total value of $54 million.

A standout feature was the incorporation of an architecturally designed retaining wall, mimicking the visual effect of wind in grassland.

To deliver this attractive feature, the contractor needed an efficient retaining wall solution and ACP was able to assist, adding value by seamlessly embedding our product into the design and helping with a precast workflow to speed up production.

The Challenges

Working in tandem with the design team, our Grid-Strip MSE wall design was integrated into the project early on, ensuring we could make design improvements as required.

We then helped the contractor set up their precasting workflow, allowing them to manage precast production and giving them full control over the supply of panels to the site.

The contractor initially landed 20 panels per day however quickly increased its capacity up to 30 panels per day – a reflection of how efficient the MSE wall system is to produce and install.

Significant downpours threatened to slow down the project however due to the efficiencies of the system when it comes to constructability the contractor was able to quickly make up for lost time.

ACP’s Solution: Grid-Strip MSE Walls

The AIL Grid-Strip System, available from ACP, represents the most significant improvement to the design and construction efficiency of MSE walls in decades.

With its standardised width, the Grid-Strip System makes all types of MSE Retaining Wall Systems easier to design, inventory and construct, saving valuable time and money.

This system offers a design life of 100+ years, ensuring long-term performance and minimal maintenance.

A total of 756 panels were installed at Lyndhurst creating a wall area of 2,947m2. The efficient precasting system allowed the contractor to install the strips 3 times faster than competitor products, with the added advantage of easier handling and placement.

Overall, this project was delivered with a 10% faster construction time when compared to other products in the market.

Merger of Australian Construction Products and Safe Direction

We are delighted to announce the merger of Safe Direction Pty Ltd and Australian Construction Products Pty Ltd (ACP).
On 1 May 2023 Jaybro, Australia’s leading supplier to the civil construction and infrastructure sector, and owner of ACP, purchased 100% of the share capital of Safe Direction. Under Jaybro’s ownership the two businesses will be merged to form Australia’s preeminent company manufacturing and supplying vehicle barrier systems.

A compelling motivation for the merger is the value created for our customers from combining the collective resources and knowledge of the two companies. Notably there will be significant broadening of the product range and enhancement to distribution reach and capacity. There will be transitionary steps as the two businesses assemble under the one entity, Safe Direction. Part of this transition includes the consolidation of the products and services offered by the merged business into a single web domain www.safedirection.com.au

We trust that this merger will provide increased value to you and we look forward to the opportunity to be of assistance.
